it was bad enough that jared had decided it was imperative to mess with her and actually approach her when she was with sebastian – but it was even worse that sebastian was actually being nice to him. didn’t he realize that being nice would only encourage jared’s behavior? that devilish smile would only widen to show more of his pearly too-white teeth, and those pale blue eyes would only pierce deeper into the very depths of their souls. mona knew guys like him – actually, to be more specific, she knew him. the fashion in which he acted was something that she’d realized very quickly, which was mostly why she was having an affair with him – understanding and knowing let her feel like she was in control of her relationships. with sebastian, things weren’t always so cut and dry. he could still surprise her – and that both intrigued and disillusioned her at the same time.
sebastian and jared began their nice little chat, much to mona’s distain. she didn’t try to hide her feelings, either – she frowning deeply with her eyes narrowed in jared’s direction. one snarky comment later, she was surprised that sebastian hadn’t gotten the hint. though, mona figured that it was possible that he had gotten the hint, but was merely sticking around because he was curious about who jared was. mona had been very careful not to let the two meet in the past, and she’d never mentioned him to sebastian, so it was definitely a possibility that he would wonder.
“mona!” sebastian exclaimed as soon as the words about jared’s constant drunken stupor escaped her lips, causing mona to whip her head in sebastian’s direction and shoot him a rather stern glare. he didn’t seem to catch it, though, his gaze instead transfixed on jared. “i’m sorry, she’s had a bad evening.” okay, she couldn’t argue with that – her day had been pretty horrible. but it was no different than normal – mona was beginning to realize just how much all her days were turning out to be bad. happiness was barely palpable to her anymore.
she turned to look at jared again, not failing to catch his amused look. she narrowed her eyes once more at him, although she kept quiet – an out of character move for the generally outspoken, bitchy brunette. truthfully, she was just hoping that maybe he would grow bored and go away or something. unfortunately, he didn’t.
“i can tell,” jared admitted, his blue eyes meeting her brown ones. “you look a little annoyed, d. what happened?”
“you showed up,” mona merely said, her friendly tone dripping with bitter sarcasm. “before that, i was just peachy.” she paused. “and don’t call me ‘d’.” much to her dismay, jared’s amused smile only seemed to widen as she displayed her irritation. sadistic bastard…
just as mona expected, sebastian took it to himself to cut in before she grew particularly mean. “how do you and mona know each other? I don’t mean to be rude, but i haven’t heard a word about you.” of course, sebastian had picked the worse possible question to ask. she could sense that jared was going to come up with some long-winded answer that would just end up irritating her more.
“for good reason, dear,” mona told him in an effort to shut jared up, but it didn’t exactly work.
“aw, d…you haven’t mentioned me?” jared asked mona, who merely glared at him. “i’m jared carmichael. as in, gregory’s son.” he explained, figuring that, if anything, sebastian would know that gregory was mona’s agent. “mona and i are the best of friends, really – i’m surprised we haven’t met before.” he glanced at mona. “and frankly, i’m hurt that you never mentioned me! i really am.”
mona couldn’t help but let her features morph to form a disgusted expression. the thought of jared being her best friend was actually enough to make her feel sick. “as lovely as this was – don’t you have some alcohol to abuse or whatever?” she inquired, her eyebrows raised in a warning fashion. it was her just try and make me angrier look.
apparently, jared wanted to try. he stared at mona for a long moment, as if trying to figure out what would be the best way to irritate her even more so, before turning to look at sebastian and putting on a brilliant smile. mona inwardly grimaced – that smile meant that he had something particularly treacherous up his sleeve.
“so, sebastian, where were you last night? you missed a great party.”
mona sighed, the remnants of her hangover going into overdrive and causing her head to hurt even more than before. predictable he may be, but she should have never let herself forget one key fact about jared carmichael: when a situation called for it, he could be just as devious as she herself could be.
