sienna had come to the conclusion that ivan's goal in life was to destroy her. he wanted to just ruin everything in it for his own satisfaction. it amused him to see sienna suffer like this, didn't it? enough was enough! she was not going to stay away from that apartment anymore. sophie jayne pearson was only a ten minute drive away and ivan had made her promise him that she would not reveal herself to the most important person in her life until a week after she arrived. how could you seriously ask that of someone? how could you seriously ask that of sienna? yep, ivan really did want to kill her. the fact that sienna had actually kept the promise was shocking. but let's face it. it wasn't like a bennett to keep a secret or suddenly turn invisible. certainly people were wondering where the hell she had gone. she needed to get out of this stupid house! plus, three days had gone by, and in the nineteen-year-old's book that was technically three months. if ivan got upset with her he could go off and read a lame-o comic book. she was going to see her best friend whether macho man liked it or not.
the girl's tiny hands reached for the blackberry on the sheets of her queen sized bed and quickly scrolled through her contacts. seeing sophie was her main priority, but checking if mason would finally answer her calls was her second. it'd been weeks maybe even months since she had heard from him. this just wasn't like him. what had she done since she left santorini to piss him off so much? it wasn't like she had wanted to go. if it had been up to her she would still be living in her tiny house facing the clear, blue ocean. definitely not here. within seconds the mobile phone was pressed against sienna's ear and she listened as the rings droned on.
"hey, it's mason. i'm not answering the phone obviously. leave a message and i'll get back to you. bye."
there was nothing more frusterating then listening to that stupid voicemail. she had now heard it at least a thousand times. every call was the exact same. seven annoying rings and then his musical voice would sing in her ear before that beep went off signaling her to leave her message. "i'll get back to you my ass." sienna huffed and threw her phone back onto the mattress and stormed into her master bathroom.
perfume bottles and make-up were scattered across sienna's bathroom counter along with a few black streaks from the clumsy girl dropping her eyeliner while applying it earlier on that morning. it was a bitch to wake up in the morning. of course she had to be the one that was to open the tiny diner downtown every morning from monday to friday. sienna was still surprised with herself whenever she woke up to the tune playing on her alarm clock at a bright and early seven-thirty. things could be worse, right? she could have no job at all or be attending the university. ugh, you didn't even want to get started on college. having a job with ridiculous hours was a thousand times better then sitting in a big classroom full of fifty strangers for three hours. at least this way she was making money of her own. once she directed her first motion picture movie sienna wouldn't need her parents help funding for her anymore. she'd have a big loft in california that she herself paid for along with everything inside it. the thought was so sweet. one day it would happen, but until then it was waiting on tables four through sixteen five days a week. she had survived this long.
a pair of bright blue eyes stared into the set across from them while sienna's pale fingers reached for the tube of mascara beside her make-up bag. a little touch up wouldn't hurt. she didn't want to go walking into ivan and sophie's apartment looking like something that just walked off the streets. you wouldn't say that about sienna even if she hadn't applied more mascara. the outfit she had thrown would certainly get some attention. her little ensemble hadn't been exactly what the brunette had been going for when she threw off her apron and black slacks as soon as she walked into her closet. she had honestly been planning to go in just a pair of blue jeans and a plain t-shirt, but she couldn't keep her eyes away from that pretty navy blue sweater she had bought earlier that week. if it turned out to be too fancy for this occasion then sienna would simply get sophie to put on something as equally fabulous and they'd go out to a club. her best friend had probably spent all of her time around ivan and that wasn't going to be good for the blonde whatsoever. a dose of a shirtless ivan here and there was okay, but not twenty-four seven. we all know that boy never likes to keep his shirt on when he's in the comfort of his own home. just because sophie is there doesn't mean that will change. or would it? sienna would have to see for herself when she got there. if she walked in and saw nothing on ivan's perfectly sculpted body then sophie would never hear the end of it. god, did she love to torture her best friend.
after batting her eyelashes and giving herself a once over the girl spun on her heel, quietly walking back into her bedroom to recieve her cell phone. as soon as sienna's greedy hands picked up the mobile she dialed the number she knew by heart and held it to her ear once again. one... two... three.. four... five... six... seven rings. "hey, it's mason. i'm..." and that was all that mason's beautiful voice played before sienna pushed down on the end button and walked out of the master bedroom into the hallway. she wouldn't call him again. this was the end of sienna and mason and she would just have to accept that. it was bound to happen at some point, right? you couldn't hold on to something that had already slipped away. things would start looking up today as soon as she was able to throw her arms around her best friend in the universe and scream into her ear until they were both deaf. what was she still doing here?
the girl's pace sped up and soon enough her feet her racing around the kitchen in search for her car keys so she could get the hell out from under this room. once her hands latched onto the copper keys she did a one-eight and practically ran for the front door in a rush to slip on her gladiator shoes. time ticked away while sienna shoved her feet underneath all those black straps and secured them behind her heel. "stupid gladiator sandels! you're going to make me late," sienna screamed down at her feet while her index finger pulled up the straps around her left foot. the shoes were tight around her feet soon after sienna dropped her foot down to the ground, and she didn't hesitate to reach for the front door and yank it wide open. the cool breeze blew a few strands of dark brown hair in the girl's face once she stepped outside and turned around to lock up her house. this was the one thing she loved about the summer in montréal compared to the summer in greece. santorini could reach a one hundred and fifteen degrees on a sunny day in july while here it was perfect seventy-five. if sienna hadn't been in such a hurry to see sophie she would have walked to ivan joyce's apartment, but her feet drug her to her audi without giving that thought a chance to get inside sienna's pretty little head.
it felt like just yesterday sophie and sienna had snuck into her older brother's bedroom with a bottle of vodka in hand. well, that had happened not to long ago for herself except sophie hadn't been there laughing with her and it wasn't jasper's room she was climbing the side of the house to get into, but that was not here or there. that had been the good times. things had been so simple then. they had been inseperable. wherever sophie went sienna would follow and vice versa. it had been so hard to picture what life without sophie would be like and then it had actually happened. now that was a day that haunted sienna's mind pretty much every chance it got. her parents had been the ones that wanted to send her away and for what reason completely stumped sienna. she had cleaned up her act. there wasn't a whole lot you could do when you were stuck to stay indoors for a at least half a year. sure, she had snuck sophie and mason in her bedroom a lot. a lot being practically every night, but jasper had been the only one that ever knew about that and sienna was sure that her brother would not spill that to his parents. they hardly spoke a word to each other and they still lived under the same roof. hannah and pierce walked into sienna's room on a friday night to deliever the news. if they had been expecting to get a 'oh! boarding school? really? i'm so excited!' they were fooling themselves. of course sienna had freaked. she screamed and yelled and wanted to throw something at her vanity mirror. they had said she was over reacting, but they obviously hadn't taken into consideration the life she had built back then. by sending her to paris they pulled her away from mason, the love of her life, and sophie. obviously they didn't want her to be happy and that's why sienna had denied their offer for her to come back home after she graduated. she wanted them to be out of her life as much as possible and that's why she had also decided to become more independent. she'd never go back there. nothing could ever go back to the way it was.
this had been what wondered in sienna's mind while she weaved her audi through the streets. she hadn't even noticed that the car had come to a complete stop and her hand had pulled it into park. reality slowly sank back into sienna's system and once it finally reached the pit of her stomach her hand reached for the door handle to her left. sienna allowed her eyes to blink rapidly until she was fully out of her trance before she shut the car door behind her and sucked in a deep breath. finally! after so many years she was going to be reunited with sophie pearson. her nerves had ran from the tips of her fingers to the bottom of her toes while her feet carried her along the paved path. god, could this walk be any longer? sienna took longer strides and kept her eyes alert for the familiar apartment number until she finally stepped right in front of the door. sienna couldn't stretch her grin any wider as she formed her hand into a fit and held it to the wooden door. knock, knock, knock. "c'mon sophie." sienna rocked on the balls of her heels as she attempted to contain herself. she was going to explode.

if there had been anytime in her life that she needed a miracle, this was it. okay so that wasn't completely true, miracles were the main reason that she was here and alive. however standing wearing only her underwear and a towel wrapped around her thin body wasn't exactly what sophie pearson had in mind. well at least she was standing in a bathroom which was a secure room minus the fact it didn't have a lock. things could be worse but it was really her own stupidity that brought this on, what kind of idiot forgot to bring clothes to change into, especially when ivan joyce was in the same apartment? there were two options she had here, both of them were reasonably logical. perhaps a little insane and held a possibility for mortification and awkward silences for the next couple of days, but perfectly logical in the eyes of someone who was desperate. she could simply change into the clothes she'd worn today, that had been the first thought which popped into her mind. until the blonde turned around to see chester asleep on the pile of clothes. she'd tried to push him aside with the toilet brush but the cat made a noise unnatural to all living things and gave a look which made sophie take a few steps back and reconsider using the toilet brush to defend herself. lets just say that chester hadn't taken well to his new roommate, dougie, who was ironically enough, a dog. ever since, it had been a tug of war between the two animals for attention. sophie and ivan could barely even sit down and watch a movie together without being harassed by animals. it was so of a blessing in disguise really, having to pay attention to chester and dougie drew sophie's mind away from ivan. yes, ivan joyce, her best friend of six years and roommate. sienna bennett seemed to leave out the part about ivan having turned into an incredibly gorgeous guy during one of their many five hour phone calls. the twenty-one year old was the reason sophie had considered risking her life by provoking chester.
the other option had been piss bolting down the hall and into her bedroom, that was the most sane option. however there were risks to be taken which would effect everything between herself and ivan for, oh i dunno, forever. knowing her luck, the very second she walked out of the bathroom ivan would be walking past and the two would crash into each other. sophie had enough self esteem issues as it was and having ivan joyce see her in her underwear wasn't going to help. the eighteen year old silently prayed to god, bobbing up and down on the balls of her feet due to the fact the bathroom tiles were like ice against her feet. she was a good catholic girl, better than tristin, so why couldn't she get lucky just this once. surely ivan will want to shower soon so staying in the bathroom for any longer was unacceptable and would create an awkward conversation when the boy knocked on the door quietly and asked if she would be much longer. then sophie would have to ask him to turn around so she could run to her bedroom and there would be that awkward silence and...okay. screw it. she was going to run. the blonde held the towel around her body almost as though it was the only thing keeping her alive, held her breath and opened the door slightly. sophie looked down the hall and into the apartment, sighing in relief when it was seemingly empty. after thanking god for giving her this one lucky break, the tall girl walked out into the hall, however of course something had to go wrong. it was so incredibly typical and she knew to expect it. the front door opened and the squeak of floorboards sounded as ivan entered the apartment. move you idiot! sophie bit her lip and stepped back, instantly stumbling over some fat, fluffy thing and into ivan's room. the blonde fell onto the ground and tried to grab her towel which was currently being dragged off by chester. "wonderful. thank you chester." sophie hissed sarcastically, grabbing the flannel shirt which was thrown hastily over ivan's bed. of course he'd gone back outside after all this had happened. although it seemed rather impossible at the time, things could be worse. she couldn't be wearing underwear and ivan could have walked inside the apartment instead of returning outside to fetch dougie who had run off. never did sophie think she'd be thanking dougie for something, but there she was. the blonde pulled on ivan's shirt, knowing better than to step foot into that hallway just wearing her underwear.
why were things so different? things weren't supposed to be like this. they were supposed to be just like they were six years ago, back in new york city. minus the cancer and ivan's mother. sophie loved ivan, other than sienna, he was her best friend in the entire world and the blonde had always thought nothing could change that. it wasn't that sophie didn't love ivan anymore, that wasn't the problem. it was because she did love him, just not the way she was used to. stupid, cliché...that's what it was. falling in love with your best friend, good job sophie pearson, you really know how to get your heart broken. for the past year or so, the blonde had made it impossible for males to even make a dent in her feelings. sure she'd sit there with her friends and admire the muscles on the football players, but why go through with a silly high school relationship that was only going to end in tears? it had annoyed her because she'd had a reason not to believe in high school relationships. not only the failure of her own, but the failure of her brother's. tristin and ophelia were the high school couple you'd expect to get married, but then they broke up. within a year of graduating. the two of them had been a living example as to why you don't date stupid and immature high school boys. but then of course, they had to go fall in love again and fulfil everyone's prophecies of them getting married and living the perfect life. finding reasons not to date in her senior year of high school had been hard, so sophie had simply just gone out with boys. it was nothing serious, just simple dates that meant nothing. if you didn't feel nothing, then there was nothing to loose. loving ivan joyce however, was a different story. there were billions of people in the world and out of them all, ivan was the only one who could truly break sophie's heart. she'd tried to deny it for weeks but everything spilled out over one instant messaging conversation with sienna bennett.
spilling her guts to her best friend over the internet wasn't exactly what sophie had in mind. telling her in person perhaps would have been more ideal, though that was a little hard considering sienna was in france. or dublin. or greece. sophie really had no idea where that girl was anymore, it didn't matter though. she was still sienna and she was still her best friend. but the blonde had to tell sophie. if she told tristin, he'd haul her ass back to greece and forbid her from seeing ivan. it wouldn't matter to him if sophie told him that never in a millions years would ivan joyce even acknowledge her in that way. telling ophelia may have been a good idea, but you never know who's in the room and telling her sister-in-law could possibly have the same outcome. sienna seemed like the only one she could tell and technically, sophie didn't even tell her straight out. with a few typed sentences, sienna had made the blonde announce her feelings for ivan joyce. what sophie needed right now, as she had for a long time, was her best friend. the blonde pulled herself up from the floor of ivan's bedroom and hurried across the hall quickly, shutting the door to her bedroom securely behind her. just as she was about to take the red flannel shirt off, sophie stopped. it was comfortable so why take it off? she did up only enough buttons to keep the majority of her underwear hidden and sat down on her bed. if ivan would walk around with no shirt on then it was only fair that sophie could wear one of his shirts over her underwear, she definitely went through enough to get it anyway. a yawn escaped sophie's mouth as she reached over for her study books and flipped them each open, setting them out in front of her. within a few minutes of studying various biology facts, the front door to the apartment opened and the sturdy footsteps of ivan joyce could be heard as the door swung shut. now he decided to walk in, if only ivan knew he'd been moments from stuttering awkwardly in front of sophie who probably would have been frozen on the spot and wanting to disappear into a deep, dark hole. in some strange and twisted way, things had worked out just fine. ivan had unknowingly saved himself from the longest awkward silence in history and sophie had scored herself a new shirt along with the memory of why she should never, ever get herself into a situation such as this ever again.
after a few minutes, studying became the last of sophie's worries. not particularly something she wanted to worry herself with just this second. the blonde reached over and set her guitar in her lap, absentmindedly picking a few various strings into pointless melodies which she wouldn't remember within minutes of playing them. at some point ivan's footsteps echoed down the hall and the bathroom door closed, the shower starting up not long after. it was incredibly easy living with ivan, once she pushed her feelings for him to the very back of her mind. in the mornings they'd venture out into the kitchen and silently pour themselves bowls of cereal then sit cross legged in the living room, watching cartoons until one of them decided to start preparing for the day. night was usually rather relaxed as well. seeing as they were both normally home by six o'clock, the pair would cook dinner and eat whilst conversing about their day. after dishes and other various cleaning up chores it was basically do whatever they wanted. sometimes that involved eating ice cream on the couch whilst watching cheesy horror movies or teen dramas which sophie "forced" ivan to watch with her. or maybe they'd study for a few hours, quizzing each other and having more fun than thought possible, eventually ending up sleeping sprawled out on the bed. there were other days when ivan would come home to sophie asleep on the couch with chester sitting on top of her head. at times like those, the blonde would usually wake up to a blanket tucked around her and some leftovers in the fridge. she couldn't find a better roommate and sophie wouldn't want to find someone other than ivan. he'd became even more like her family than before, just in the short space of the past few weeks.
one thing she hadn't succeeded in was having a conversation with ivan. sure they'd talked, a lot, but the discussions weren't what sophie had intended. back in new york they'd had so many deep and in depth conversations about everything and anything. ivan's mother, sophie's parents...life and death. sophie was just so intent on find out about what has happened during the past three years of ivan's life the right way, that she hadn't got around to doing it at all. putting that conversation off was probably the worse thing she could have done. just blurting out a question to ivan would do that job, being blunt probably would be best. at least that way, he'd have to give an answer but pushing him into talking about something he didn't want to talk about was the last thing sophie wanted. worrying about ivan was something she couldn't help, it was natural. a day hadn't gone by since she was twelve years old that she hadn't worried about ivan joyce. three knocks on the front door pulled sophie from her thoughts and strumming of her guitar. dougie started barking and sophie lazily climbed down from her bed and walked from her bedroom. the dog came bolting towards sophie and she smiled at the look of excitement upon his face. "i'm getting it!" sophie called out to ivan through the bathroom door as she walked to the front of the apartment and started struggling with the locks. finally, after what seemed like forever, the door swung open. for at least five seconds, sophie stood there blinking in shock. then who was standing in front of her finally registered and the blonde let out a scream and threw her arms around sienna bennett. dougie was barking excitedly from the sudden noise and started sniffing sienna curiously. "you're here! in montréal! on m--ivan and i's doorstep! oh my god, this is just..." sophie stuttered excitedly as she bobbed up and down on the spot, almost not believing that her best friend was standing there in front of her, "wow..." a cool breeze hit sophie's bare legs and she looked down, a slight blush rising to her cheeks as she remembered what she was wearing. so this probably wasn't the most appropriate outfit to be wearing when sienna was standing right in front of her, at ivan joyce's place of residence. "come inside, it's freezing out there," sophie fussed, pulling sienna inside and closing the door behind her. living in greece for three years didn't exactly help matters when sophie moved to canada, it was a lot colder than she was used to. "i've missed you s," the blonde said with a small smile on her lips, hugging sienna tightly. ___________________________________
