as sonja lifted mona over her shoulder and began carrying her towards the hospital, max was both amazed and mortified at the same time. first of all, how did she get so strong? it was like she was some sort of superhero and she’d neglected to tell him, or something. like, maybe she was buffy the vampire slayer – sonja the vampire slayer? – or one of ali larter’s characters from heroes, or something.
but his amazement was short-lived, as it was soon replaced with an overwhelming sense of panic when mona’s head was accidentally slammed against a lamppost. of course, sonja didn’t mean to turn around and hit the lamppost with mona’s head – but it didn’t change the fact that sebastian was just going to murder him even more if mona kept being so accident-prone. he didn’t think his brother would appreciate it if mona woke up with amnesia…
“oh my god!” max squealed for about the millionth time that day, hurrying over to sonja and mona. he quickly looked at mona, who was still completely unconscious, trying to determine if she’d acquired any other bruises or scrapes or something. “please don’t die, okay?” he asked her quietly, although she obviously couldn’t hear him, much less reply. meanwhile, the paparazzi was having a field day with this – they were busy snapping photos of the unresponsive actress and her unfortunate series of accidents, all the way grinning in such a way that indicated they knew just how much money they would make off the pictures.
“sonja – ” max looked at the blonde, who was busy glaring at their cab driver. steve was looking at the trio with an expectant expression on his face, his hand outstretched as if he was waiting for some sort of extra compensation for driving them the four blocks between the yoga studio and the hospital.
“you. i didn’t forget about you. cab fare is still sixty dollars.”
max’s eyes darted between them, as if he was watching a stand-off of some sort. both parties narrowed their eyes at one another. moments passed.
then, suddenly – “keep the change.” sonja’s voice, coupled with the fact that she threw about a dollar in quarters at steve and his cab, seemed to signify one thing: she’d won.
“sonja, i think we should go inside now – you know – ” he motioned to the enthusiastic paparazzi surrounding them, moving closer and closer with every picture they took.
they quickly headed towards the hospital, mona in tow, and away from the photographers who were yelling at them to come back for “just one more picture!” ignoring them, the trio escaped through the automatic doors and into the hospital’s emergency room.
max looked around. people were all around them – some patients, some doctors, some nurses – and none seemed to really notice them. so, like he’d seen in movies, he rushed forward and…well…
“she needs help! someone – ” he didn’t dare say himself, “kicked her in the face! but certainly not me! no, someone else did!” he announced at the top of his lungs. the entire waiting room fell quiet as he spoke, and it was only a few moments before a tall, female doctor headed towards them quickly.
“how long has she been unconscious?” the doctor, whose identification card read darcy o’connor, inquired, her blue eyes shining with concern.
“not that long – can you help her?” max asked, not really wanting to explain that mona had passed out from the shock of hitting her face against a glass window because their cab driver had slammed on the brakes too hard.
“we need to run some tests,” darcy explained quickly, as a stretcher was wheeled over. mona was placed on it, still unconscious, and quickly rushed to another room with the doctors.
that left max and sonja. alone. max and sonja all by themselves (plus the other people in the waiting room, but whatever). feeling the overwhelming awkwardness between them, max dejectedly plopped down on one of the chairs nearby. “i’m really sorry,” he quietly said after a moment, avoiding his gaze from meeting sonja’s. “this is all my fault.”
well, technically, it was true. if he had never decided that going to sonja’s yoga class would be the best way to try and talk to her, then he would have never had the opportunity to be his clumsy self and kick mona in the eye by accident. now, his actions had caused a chain reaction that would most likely end with sebastian beating him up.
or, maybe if he was lucky, sebastian would just glare in an intimidating fashion for a long time. although sebastian was his younger brother and kinda short, he could still be really scary if he wanted to be. and max was pretty sure that he would want to be, considering mona’s current situation.
“i’m sure you don’t really want to be here – you can go, i’ll stay here for mona.” he offered, kindly. “don’t let this ruin your day or anything like that.”
